Overview

BNB is the native asset of BNB Chain, an EVM-compatible network that grew out of the exchange token issued by Binance in 2017. It is used for transaction fees, staking on BNB Smart Chain, and fee discounts and product access within the Binance ecosystem.

Origin & history

BNB was issued in a July 2017 initial coin offering as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. It migrated to Binance Chain in 2019, and Binance Smart Chain launched in September 2020 with EVM compatibility. The two chains were rebranded as BNB Chain in 2022.

Founders & governance

Created by Binance, founded by Changpeng Zhao and Yi He. Core development is coordinated by BNB Chain contributors; Binance remains the dominant commercial sponsor of the ecosystem.

How it works

BNB Smart Chain uses a proof-of-staked-authority model in which a limited validator set, elected by delegated stake, produces blocks at short intervals. This yields low fees and fast finality with fewer validators — and therefore weaker decentralization — than larger proof-of-stake networks. opBNB, an optimistic rollup, handles higher-throughput activity.

Tokenomics & supply

BNB launched with a 200 million supply. A long-running quarterly burn programme, later replaced by an automatic on-chain burn plus real-time gas-fee burning, has reduced supply materially with a stated long-term target of 100 million BNB. There is no new issuance beyond the original allocation.

Utility & use cases

BNB pays gas on BNB Smart Chain and opBNB, is delegated to validators for staking rewards, and unlocks exchange fee discounts, launch participation and other Binance product tiers. It is also widely used as a quote and collateral asset across the BNB Chain DeFi ecosystem.

Ecosystem

Ecosystem components include BNB Smart Chain, opBNB, Greenfield for decentralized storage, and applications such as PancakeSwap and Venus. The dominant client is a fork of go-ethereum maintained by BNB Chain contributors.

Wallets & custody

Custody spans self-custody wallets, delegated staking, and exchange or institutional custody. Concentration of ecosystem activity around a single commercial sponsor is a distinct counterparty consideration for holders.

Regulatory notes

Binance has faced significant regulatory action, including a 2023 U.S. settlement with the Department of Justice and related agency penalties, and the resignation and sentencing of its former chief executive. Several jurisdictions have restricted or licensed Binance services separately from BNB itself. Nothing on this page is legal, tax, or investment advice.

FAQs

Is BNB the same as Binance the exchange?
No. BNB is the network asset of BNB Chain; Binance is a company whose products grant BNB holders certain benefits. The two are closely linked commercially.
How does the burn work?
An automatic on-chain mechanism removes BNB from supply based on block production and price inputs, and gas fees are also burned, targeting an eventual 100 million supply.
How decentralized is BNB Chain?
Block production is limited to a small elected validator set, which improves speed and cost but concentrates control relative to networks with thousands of validators.
What is opBNB?
An optimistic rollup built on the OP Stack that settles to BNB Smart Chain for cheaper high-volume transactions.
